What can you use the app for?

Readability does two main things: it encourages people to support writing and it makes it easier for people to read online content comfortably. The application allows users to save the content they find while browsing the web so they can access it later. Users can also design their own preferred reading environment by choosing various settings. Readability allows the user to remove the general clutter that is often found around content, such as advertisements, images and other unnecessary items. The user can also choose the size of the text as well as how much of the page it covers. The application is available for computers as well as smart phones and tablet devices. Readability also shortens links for easy sharing.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Readability began in 2009 as a JavaScript reading solution that would transform a web page into a customized reading environment. It was created and released by the New York City based Arc90. The Arc90 team currently includes Lead Developer Chris Dary, Lead Technologist Avi Flax, Lead Strategists Chris LoSacco, Rich Ziade and Tim Meaney, Designer Bobby Ziade and Directors Dawn Eigenbrod, Jen Epting, Josh Diehl, Andy Lewisohn and Rama Poola.

What are the differences to other apps?

Rather than simply creating new content, Readability also makes existing web content easier to digest. The application provides an array of viewing controls so the user can read in a comfortable virtual environment. The application also promotes writing by working on compensating writers for their contributions.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Readability website has a very high class, sophisticated feel with a design that goes well with its focus on reading and writing. The website features a primarily white background with a deep red couch icon that adds a hint of color. Vintage images of a reader with an Apple iPad in hand add personality while the classic font choices help pull the site together. Users can find five navigational links in the upper, right hand corner to help them find their way around. The actual reading tool is very easy to use with a left hand menu bar that includes sliders and other simple choices.

How does the registration process work?

A newcomer to the Readability website can get started by clicking the “Sign Up” link in the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. The following page includes the registration form. The top of the form asks the user how much they would like to pay for their subscription. The rest of the form asks for a first and last name, email address, username and password. A small note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information, they are automatically agreeing to the Readability terms of service.

What does it cost to use the application?

Readability has set up a unique billing system that some users may like. The registration form asks the user how much they would like to pay. The form also advises the user that 70% of their subscription fee goes to the writers and publishers who work with Readability. The fee minimum is approximately $5. The user can add more to that if they would like to further support writing and the website.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Readability is an interesting resource for anyone who does a lot of online reading. It is also an application that can make those who support writers feel even better with a large portion of their subscription going to contributors and publishers. The site is very easy to navigate and offers an economical price for its service.
